The Roadmap for Privacy by Design in Mobile Communications: A Practical Tool for Developers, Service Providers, and Users

Summary As the concept of Privacy by Design (PbD) gains acceptance around the world, we must now address the challenge of operationalizing its principles. In this paper, we lay out a Roadmap for PbD in the mobile communications space, describing practical steps that can be taken by all players in the industry (Device Manufacturers, Operating System and Platform Developers, Network Providers, Application Developers, and Users) to build-in privacy protections. With the number of cell phone subscriptions topping 5 billion worldwide, the time is now for a collaborative effort to ensure that individuals retain control over their personal information when using mobile devices.

This work builds upon the results of an expert panel conducted by Arizona State University's Privacy by Design Research Lab.
