2019 Mandatory Statistics Reporting

As the new year approaches, so does the time to submit your statistics to the IPC. First, let me say that I appreciate the important work that institutions and health information custodians do to keep track and report statistics relating to requests under Ontario’s freedom of information and health privacy laws.

We have now opened the IPC’s online statistics submission website for FIPPA/MFIPPA institutions and PHIPA health information custodians to submit their annual statistics for the 2019 reporting year. The deadline for submissions is February 28, 2020.

It’s also important to note that, according to Ontario’s health privacy law, health information custodians must also submit privacy breach statistics to my office according to the following guidelines:

  • Health information custodians that are also institutions under FIPPA/MFIPPA must submit health privacy breach statistics, even if they experienced no breaches during the 2019 reporting year.
  • Custodians that are not institutions under FIPPA/MFIPPA only need to submit breach statistics if they experienced a breach.

Examples of health information custodians include health care practitioners such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, speech-language pathologists, chiropractors, dental professionals, dieticians, medical laboratory technologists, massage therapists, midwives, occupational therapists, opticians and physiotherapists.

To help with this new requirement, visit our user-friendly online submission website and complete the easy-to-follow workbook. You’ll also find some frequently asked questions and a fact sheet that aim to make reporting as easy as possible.

If you do not yet have a login ID, I encourage you to contact my office as soon as possible at [email protected]. Once you have your login ID, you can create a password and start filling in the questionnaire. Please do not fax or mail us the workbook. You must submit your statistical report online at https://statistics.ipc.on.ca.

As always, we are here to help. If you need assistance, you can contact my office at [email protected] or 416-326-3333. Toll-free 1-800-387-0073.
