IPC Webinar: Understanding Exemptions

Dates:
Start: 27-04-2017
End: 27-04-2017
Details:

Mark your calendars!

On April 27, 2017, the IPC will host a webinar about exemptions under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) and its municipal counterpart (MFIPPA).

A basic principle of Ontario’s access and privacy laws is that Ontarians have a right of access to government-held information, and exemptions from their right of access should be limited and specific.

Freedom of information coordinators (FOICs) are on the front line when it comes to processing freedom of information (FOI) requests made by the public, media and others, and must ensure that they properly apply exemptions under FIPPA and MFIPPA. The IPC remains committed to protecting the public’s right of access to information and to working with FOICs, and the public institutions they support, to ensure they understand and comply with these laws. In the spirit of co-operation, the IPC is pleased to host a webinar to enhance participants’ understanding of exemptions, how they apply to FOI requests, and other issues that come up in dealing with access to information laws.

Join IPC experts for an overview of:

  • The principles behind certain exemptions under FIPPA and MFIPPA and how they have been interpreted by the IPC
  • Discretionary versus mandatory exemptions
  • Other issues that arise in FOI requests, such as custody and control of records, and frivolous and vexatious requests

We hope you will be able to take part in this very important discussion.
